I know this topic is a bit old, but I thought it might help others to get the answer.
The Nintendo Wi-Fi USB Connector is not a special device. It is simply a WLAN device based on one of the few chipsets that is capable of Master mode on Windows, coupled with software to handle authentication and setup of the WLAN device itself. On a Windows machine this is required because, well, we know why it is required, the OS can't handle the setup of such a thing itself.
However, on Linux we don't have that problem. Many WLAN devices can be put into Master mode on Linux (assuming you are using native drivers, and not ndiswrapper), and almost all distributions include the necessary support software (IPtables, iwconfig, dhpcd, etc).
Because of that, it is easy to replicate the soft AP functionality of the Wi-Fi Connector with generic WiFi hardware on Linux.
For just that reason, I wrote this Guide. The Guide will cover everything you need to do to get a generic Master mode capable WLAN card to act as an access point for the Wii. It even includes a script you can use to automate the entire thing.
Now, as for the Wi-Fi Connector itself. There are native Linux drivers for the device. However, Master mode support in those drivers is still considered unstable. Eventually it will be possible to use the Wi-Fi Connector as a soft AP under Linux, but just not yet.
In the meantime, you could look and see if you have any other WiFi devices that have native Linux drivers capable of Master mode. There are many, including Prism, RTL8180, Centrino, etc.
