Acura is the American luxury automotive brand produced by Honda Motors. Capitalizing on the legendary reliability and fuel economy Honda built in the United States, Acura vehicles bring the line of vehicles to a world-class standard. The RDX model was first introduced in the United States in model year 2007 as a compact replacement for Acura’s MDX crossover SUV. The RDX is an easy to own vehicle with many unique luxury features. The RDX crossover brought many firsts to the automotive scene for Honda. Most notably, the first generation RDX (2007-12) utilizes a turbocharged inline four cylinder engine that produces an astonishing 240 horsepower and 260 foot-pounds of torque. Turbocharging artificially increases the amount of air volume available, particularly at higher speeds, but sacrifices power at low speeds, when the turbocharger is not spinning fast enough to produce large volumes of air. Acura solved this problem by adding a variable valve to the turbo, allowing it to restrict the air passage size at lower speeds to create higher flow rates and increased power. While turbocharging has been around since at least 1885 when the concept was patented by Gottlieb Daimler of Mercedes-Benz fame, turbochargers are still considered exotic. The system creates a pleasurable to drive system and greatly reduces the turning radius of the RDX by varying the power to the rear wheels in a turn.
The current second generation Acura RDX did away with the turbocharged four cylinder engine and the SH-AWD system in favor of a naturally-aspirated V6 and a simplified all wheel drive system to improve fuel mileage.
